Project for Future Researchers at IITH to Enhance Network Development with Scholarship of Japan (FRIENDSHIP) Ph.D./Master + Ph.D. Scholarship in Japan via JICA FRIENDSHIP Project for FY 2014 (Third Batch)
Project Overview Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) launched the project for Future Researchers at IITH to Enhance Network Development with Scholarship of Japan (FRIENDSHIP) based on agreement between Government of Japan and Government of India. The overall goal of this Project is to enhance world-class research network between higher education institutions/ industrial clusters of Japan and IITH, whereby both can establish educational and research excellence in the field of science, technology and engineering in the future. The project aims to promote the academic interaction between IITH and Japanese universities. As an activity, the project offers scholarship for IITH graduates or expected graduates of IITH to study for Ph.D. / Master + Ph.D. degree in 9 leading Japanese universities. Availability of the scholarship This scholarship is available for those who start to study in Japan in FY2013 and FY2014. The term of scholarship is 3 years for Ph.D. and 2 years for Master. Scholarship recipients for Master are assumed to continue to study for Ph.D. for more 3 years at same laboratory. However, they need to pass the exam/assessment assigned by each university at the transition from Master to Ph.D. to obtain the scholarship for Ph.D.. Prospective Fields and Level of Study The scholarship is available to Ph.D. track students in the field of Science, Technology and Engineering. The language of the courses offered by Japanese universities is only English. Number Available About 10 - 15 for FY 2013 *About 30 for 3 year (FY2012, FY2013 and FY2014) Qualifications 1) Nationality : Citizens of India; 2) Age : between 20 and 30 years old as of April 1 in the year of the participant’s arrival in Japan in principle (Note: If University and/or course has its own limitation for age, which takes priority over this qualification); 3) Military personnel are NOT allowed to apply; 4) Applicants must have a clear understanding of the overall goal of the Project; 5) Applicants must NOT be those who will receive another scholarship through other foreign assistance at the same time; 6) Health condition: mentally and physically in sound; 7) English proficiency: to have a good command of English to a level sufficient for study in Japan; and 8) Graduates or expected graduates of the department of engineering or science at IITH only. 9) Scholarship is only available for the students applying for Engineering/ Science programs/courses in designated Japanese universities. Application Procedure –What to do as an applicant-
STEP 3 (Dec 2013 - May 2014, depending on university): -Only for successful applicants from STEP 1 and 2- (1) Successful applicants from STEP 1 and 2 are asked to submit Official Application Form of University to JICA. The details will be informed by e-mail. According to the request from university, examination and/or interview may be required through internet or by written/oral examination in Japan. If this is the case, travel expense, i.e. fight ticket, accommodation etc. are prepared and borne by JICA. (2) Simultaneously, Official Application Form for the JICA Training and Dialogue Program is to be filled in and submitted for official administration purpose. This form is shared with JICA and concerned Central Government body, i.e. Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, which is nodal point of any Foreign Assistance. After STEP 3, the official nomination of scholarship will be done after the certification of admission in prospective university is issued. Chart of Application Process
Note: Even after the deadline of STEP 1 (28th Oct 2013), applying for the scholarship to JICA may be accepted on a rolling basis and can be registered on the waiting list, but the availability of universities and courses can be limited.
