Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) started the FRIENDSHIP 2 project in December 2021, following the FRIENDSHIP project and based on the agreement between the Government of India and the Government of Japan. The purpose of the FRIENDSHIP 2 project is to establish a sustainable platform for academic and industrial collaborations between India and Japan at IITH, expecting that human resources produced through the platform will continuously contribute to academic and industrial development both in India and Japan.
The FRIENDSHIP 2 project now offers IITH-Japan FRIENDSHIP Scholarship 2 for doctoral study at Japanese universities, exclusively for graduates from master’s programs of IITH in science and technology. The scholarship aims to establish sustainable academic and industrial research collaborations between India and Japan through promoting joint research, joint supervision, and other joint activities during grantees’ doctoral study in Japan as trainees of “the JICA long-term training program###”.
### A program that provides trainees with opportunities to pursue higher degrees at Japanese universities. FRIENDSHIP Scholarship 2 has its purpose and activities, following the regulations of the JICA long-term training program.
Availability and Term of Scholarship
The scholarship is available for enrollment in Japanese Fiscal Year 2022 (April 2022-March 2023). The term of scholarship is 3 years only for doctoral programs#. No extension is admitted.
# In some limited cases, JICA admits an additional 6-month scholarship for research studentship before enrolling as a doctoral student.
A research student must
prepare for doctoral research under the supervision of his/her expected supervisor of the doctoral program, and
must pass the entrance examination by the end of March 2023 (for April 2023 enrolment); otherwise, he/she will lose entitlement to the scholarship and need to return to India at the end of research studentship. In the case where the trainee does not follow this procedure, he/she must waive the airfare for return flight to India.
Number of Available Scholarship
Field of Study
Any field of science and technology will be covered; however, priority is those where IITH and Japanese universities have actively collaborated during the FRIENDSHIP program from 2012 to 2020 and those that IITH emphasizes. Following are some of the target fields of IITH:
Preparatory study of Japanese language is not necessary.
Nationality: Citizens of the Republic of India;
Academic Background: Graduates or those who are to graduate by March 2022 from master’s programs at IITH in science and technology;
Health Condition: Mentally and physically sound;
English Proficiency: Adequate for study in Japan;
Letter of Acknowledgement by both his/her supervisor at IITH and prospective supervisor## in Japan ## Applicants need to confirm with the prospective supervisor that the entrance examination is given online. The scholarship is available only for those who apply for and have obtained admission to one of the doctoral programs in science and technology offered by Japanese universities
Those who are military personnel or military civilian employees at the time of their arrival in Japan or during the period of payment of the scholarship
Those who are to receive any other scholarship during the period of this scholarship
Financial Assistance Provided
Tuition Fees; Living Allowance; Airfare; Insurance; and other allowances following the regulation of the JICA long-term training program.

Health Certificate from IITH or other authorized institution
