From the desk of Professor V. Kanchana

Professor V. Kanchana has been working actively in the field of computational condensed matter physics for the past 20 years in India and abroad. She mainly aims at exploring material properties using first principles studies. Her main interest is towards understanding topological materials. In addition, her group is also working on thermo-electric materials, spintronic materials, layered materials, electronic topological transitions and studying the material properties under pressure

Research Field: Condensed Matter Theory, Material science

Our broad research interests includes understanding the material properties through ab-initio electronic structure calculations within the frame work of Density Functional Theory (DFT). Almost all the properties of a material can ultimately be understood from the underlying electronic structure. Starting from electronic band structure, one can study optical transitions, magnetic properties, vibrational properties, cohesive and elastic properties, topological properties and many more.

Research Highlights:

  • Addressing topological phase of matter and various topological phenomena like anomalous Hall effect, anomalous Hall conductivity and topological invariants from band structure analysis

  • The thermoelectric properties beyond relaxation time approximation including scattering mechanism

  • Exploring magnetic materials for their rich scientific significance with its excellent applications like magneto-resistance, magneto-optical effect and many more.

  • Exploring battery materials to achieve high voltage, energy density, capacity and ionic diffusion at a high charge-discharge rate.

  • Lattice dynamics explaining the phonon band dispersion, phonon group velocity, various thermal properties, lattice thermal transport properties like lattice thermal conductivity in conjuction with phonon lifetime
