IIT Hyderabad congratulates Mr. Lijin Lohithakshan, Master’s student (2022–24 batch) and currently Project Associate, Department of Design, for receiving the Best Documentary Film Award in the category ‘Social Practices and Rituals’ and the Film of the Festival Award (shared with the Belgian film ‘Holding Up The Sky’ by Pieter Van Eecke) for his documentary ‘SWARAM’ at the 5th Culture Cinema Film Festival, held at Amity University, Mumbai, on 31st October 2025. The honour also carried a monetary recognition of USD 500.
The film, created as part of his Master’s thesis (M.Des, IIT Hyderabad) under the guidance of Prof. Deepak John Mathew, explores the transformative power of sound and music in ritual practices and how they can guide participants into altered states of consciousness.
Over the past year, SWARAM has been showcased and recognised at multiple national and international film festivals.
